Life enrichment programs and activities are designed to improve the quality of life for our residents at Waltonwood, by helping seniors stay active and vital as they age with dignity and independence. Each community's Life Enrichment Program is customized to fit the specific needs of the residents, at whatever level of care they require. The Life Enrichment Coordinators develop programs such as outings, cultural and social activities, gardening projects, museum visits, games, entertainment and much more. Each community has its own “Hobby and Crafts Room” where residents can learn as well as help teach arts and crafts skills/classes. Waltonwood also has a comprehensive health and fitness program called “Forever Fit” that addresses the physical, mental as well as social needs of our residents. Life enrichment programs help foster relationships and encourage a sense of belonging within our Waltonwood communities. Independent Living Activities:
Our residents in independent living are not ready to slow down, and our Life Enrichment Coordinators plan events to reflect that-everything from a Hawaiian Luau complete with Polynesian dancing lessons, a golf putting contest and a pig roast to bus trips to Comerica Park to see the Tigers or a day trip to Canterbury Village. There is always something to do at Waltonwood!
Some of our regularly scheduled activities include:
Memories Matter:
This activity has residents bring in an item from their past and encourages them to discuss where it came from and how it impacted their lives. The items can vary from one week to the next, from a favorite picture to an item of clothing. Some residents write poetry and read it to the rest of the class. Residents learn a lot about each other through their personal stories and their humorous anecdotes.
Morning Stretch:
Part of our “Forever Fit” Program, this 45 minute class is held weekly and the average class size is 25 - 30 participants. This exercise program combines stretching, standing, leg lifts and marching- or modified versions that can be performed in a chair. The goal is to have fun and encourage residents to exercise! A key element is the accompanying music from the 1920s, 30s and 40s. Residents sing along and share funny stories and jokes with each other during class. This is truly one of our most popular activities of the day! Assisted Living Activities:
Our assisted living residents enjoy a variety of activities as well. Here the focus is on what our residents can do. Some of the residents' favorite activities include:
Gardening Club:
This involves tabletop gardens which sit right on top of the residents lap. To maintain their garden, they use soil, vegetable and flower seeds and gardening tools to cultivate.
Theme Week:
Once a month communities take on a different theme and all the activities and parties that week relate to the chosen theme. An example of one such theme week is Dream Cruise week, complete with a classic car show, a 50's Rock-n-Roll party, an old fashioned family BBQ, car memorabilia word memory games, car photo contest and much more! . Alzheimer/Dementia Care Activities:
Our memory care residents participate in appropriate activities as well. At Waltonwood, we utilize “ Montessori-Based Dementia Programming® (MBDP), an innovative technique based on the method and philosophy of famed educator, Maria Montessori. Montessori-Based Dementia Programming® makes use of rehabilitation principles including guided repetition, task breakdown, and progressing from simple to complex. While it can't prevent or cure a person with Alzheimer's, it has been shown to generally improve many aspects of their quality of life. The activities at Waltonwood focus on life skills the resident can remember, such as a previous occupation. For instance, a resident who is a former business executive may sit in on a Waltonwood department meeting, believing he/she is there to participate in the meeting. This is just one example of how we strive to adapt the activities and environment to enhance our residents' daily experience.
“Management is always improving the Waltonwood services, living conditions and appearance of the building and grounds.”
“We have made many new friends among the residents and staff of Waltonwood and for all the above reasons, we feel we made an excellent choice in making Waltonwood our home.”
“. . . the most important aspect of Waltonwood is that the caregivers are very caring. They take pride in their work with the residents. I visit my dad for an hour everyday and the caregivers talk to me about my dad and keep me posted on his condition.”
